Forest early-warning sensor

Early warning starts under the canopy.

MORAKIB is a sealed, sun-powered unit hung on a tree trunk. It continuously measures the air under the canopy and flags anomalies to an operator: it gives someone a reason to look sooner.

The film

MORAKIB in pictures.

The node, what is inside it, the path of an alert to the screen — and the place of the human in the decision.

The 3D images are design renders, and the console screen is a simulation.

In one sentence

It is a thermometer for the forest that warns an operator when the understorey turns abnormal.

It complements lookout towers, satellites and calls from the public with a measurement taken inside the canopy itself, continuously, day and night.

Function

Four quantities, continuously.

The node is dedicated to a single task, all the time: describing the air around it, and sending that description as it is.

Temperature

The temperature of the air under the canopy, at undergrowth height, as close to the ground as possible.

Humidity

The humidity of the surrounding air, measured where it matters: in the undergrowth.

Pressure

Local weather context, which helps the operator tell an anomaly apart from an ordinary change in the weather.

Gaseous compounds

The chemical make-up of the surrounding air — ground-level information that complements satellite imagery and lookout towers.

From tree to screen

How a measurement becomes a warning.

Four steps, from measurement to human decision.

  1. 01

    It measures

Continuously, in the undergrowth, where a fire starts.

  2. 02

    It transmits

Over long-range radio on an open standard, to a gateway that can be your own. It works beyond mobile coverage, on your own network.

  3. 03

    The server correlates

The value comes from the neighbourhood: the server cross-checks what several nearby nodes measure at the same moment. A neighbourhood that moves together is telling you something.

  4. 04

    A human decides

The anomaly appears on an operator's screen; the operator looks, confirms and dispatches the response.

The design rule

A human confirms.

It is a rule built into the system itself: only an identified operator marks an event as confirmed, and the system keeps a record of who confirmed it, when and on what basis. The node strengthens existing surveillance and gives your teams one more piece of information, taken from the heart of the forest.

In the field

What you see if you come across one.

A matt olive-green enclosure the size of a hand, hanging from a trunk. A dark surface on the front face, and a thin wire coming out of it.

  • It hangs from a strap.

A strap that respects the trunk and follows the tree as it grows — a point tracked explicitly in the design.

  • It is olive green, and that is functional.

Matt olive green blends into the forest with no eye-catching glare, and heats up less under the Algerian summer sun: the electronics are better protected.

  • Powered by the sun and supercapacitors.

It contains electronics and is recycled as such. If you find one on the ground, report it to the forestry services: it will get back to its place on the operators' map.

Operations

What should interest a supervising authority.

The node is the tip of a complete chain, designed for operational use.

A

Data sovereignty

The server, the database and the radio gateway are hosted on your infrastructure. The system runs on its own, and each organisation has its own isolated space at database level.

B

Traceability

Raw telemetry is kept exactly as received, before any software interpretation. What the sensor sent stays verifiable independently of how the software read it.

C

Language

Operator console in Arabic, French and English, with true right-to-left layout.

D

Integration

Standard API, outbound notifications, radio on an open standard. The system joins your alert sources and fits into your chain of command.
